The Math Behind the Bricks

The 0.315" Standard

The universal foundational metric of building bricks is the stud width. A single 1x1 brick measures exactly 8.0mm (about 0.315 inches) in width and length. Every horizontal dimension you calculate mathematically scales from this base rule.

The 5:6 Height Ratio

While a brick is ~0.315 inches wide, it is ~0.378 inches (9.6mm) tall (excluding the stud). This means plates, which are 1/3 the height of a standard brick, measure ~0.126 inches (3.2mm) each. Our calculator automatically segments vertical requirements into plates vs. bricks so you can source structural pieces accurately.

Strict Stud Snap

Real-world measurements rarely divide perfectly into whole bricks. By toggling Strict Stud Snap, the engine forces the output to the nearest whole stud or plate, while displaying the exact physical footprint underneath. This prevents impossible measurements like "13.985 studs".

How does the 1:X Scale Ratio work?

If you are building a replica of a real-world vehicle that is 15 feet long, and you set the scale ratio to 1:40, the engine divides all your real-world measurements by 40 before converting them into studs. It works bi-directionally: type into the Studs field to see how big the real-world equivalent would be at that scale for your next MOC.

Why is Minifigure scale so hard to nail down?

Official LEGO Minifigures are not anatomically proportional to real humans; they are significantly wider and shorter. While 1:42 is generally accepted for height, matching a Minifigure's width to real-world spaces (like car seats) often requires a 1:30 or 1:35 scale. Builder discretion is advised based on the specific footprint you need.


Pro-Tip: Sourcing Exact Baseplates

When your build exceeds the boundaries of a single 32x32 baseplate (10.08 x 10.08 inches), look to Mould King or CaDA for high-clutch, heavy-duty baseplates that resist warping during massive display builds.
